Do bleaching products work?

The appearance of a smile is one of the first things a person will notice about you. A lot of adults are unhappy with the appearance of their smile and will shy away from photos or conversations. Teeth whitening is one option to improve your smile. Unlike other treatments, teeth whitening is a conservative and minimally invasive way to enhance your teeth in a matter of an hour to a few weeks.

Teeth whitening works by breaking down discolorations as well as tooth aging to lighten and brighten each tooth’s appearance.  There are many causes of stains. Some of the causes include lifestyle factors such as coffee, tea and wine consumption.

There are many products out there on the market which claim to remove stains and whiten your dull and faded teeth. Each has a varying degree of whitening potential. Some whitening toothpastes may have a low form of peroxide but may also be very abrasive and wear off your enamel over time. Some products like charcoal toothpastes have no whitening ability as there is no penetration through the different tooth layers and cause enamel wear which is irreversible.

By visiting a Dental professional who can help tailor and prescribe prescription whitening hydrogen and carbamide peroxide, up to 8 shades lighter can be achieved. A full examination is required before this can happen.
