As we welcome the warmer weather, it's time to think about fun in the sun! Grab your hat and shades as you start enjoying some warm weather activities.

Warm weather also brings some considerations for your oral health. Here are some helpful tips for proper oral care during the summer months.

#1 Remember to Hydrate

Good hydration is key for your body and oral health during the summer months. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your body stays hydrated when it's warmer and helps you avoid a dental condition called dry mouth.

Dry mouth can occur for several reasons, but staying hydrated is the best way to combat it. Otherwise, it can make you more susceptible to problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

#2 Use Protective Lip Balm

Remember your lips when applying sunscreen during the warmer months. They can also get sunburnt, so using a protective lip balm is essential when you spend time in the sun.

Look for lip balms with SPF ratings for better protection.

#3 Protect Yourself During Sports

Warmer weather brings more outdoor sports activities. Don't forget to wear a protective mouthguard if you're participating in sports. Your Clifton Hill dentist can make a customised sports guard for your teeth that won't interfere with your game performance while it protects your teeth and smile from injuries.

Sports injuries account for most dental emergencies, so remember to wear your sports guard!

#4 Avoid Sugary Drinks

Summer months can make you thirsty for a cold beverage, but be careful what you reach for. Juices, soft drinks, and sports drinks contain a high amount of sugar, which contributes to tooth decay and cavities

Opting to drink water instead of sugary beverages protects your smile and hydrates your body.

We hope these tips were helpful. If it's time for your next preventive teeth cleaning and check-up, please contact your dentist in Clifton Hill.
